Beams & Columns

Versa-Lam

Selkirk Truss supplies Boise Cascade Versa-Lam LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) with its floor and roof packages. Made from sustainably sourced Douglas Fir, these products provide the strength needed for longer spans and heavier loads. Most common width is 1-3/4″ with most common depths ranging from 9-1/2″ to 24″. These can be installed up to 4 plies thick for a 7″ wide beam. Other sizes are available. We also provide LVL columns if your project requires the extra strength beyond a built-up stud pack.

As part of our design process, we will specify the beams required for your floor and/or roof and will specify LVL where regular dimensional lumber does not meet the strength requirements. If, however, you are looking for a single beam as part of a renovation project, we will be happy to assist.

Glulam

Glued laminated timbers, or glulams, introduced during the 1930s, are made by face-laminating dimension lumber with structural adhesives to produce beams of almost unlimited depth.  Exposed glulams, which show off the laminations, are still commonly installed in everything from cabins to arenas.

We supply glulam beams and columns from Mercer Mass Timber which manufactures products from sustainable timber at its local facility in the South Okanagan. We supply DFL 24f-EX grade beams in a number of standard sizes but can provide custom sizes tailored to your project. For columns, we provide DFL 16c-E grade glulam in a wide variety of sizes.

Some building plans often specify glulam for its combination of strength and aesthetic appeal of the finished exposed laminations. Where not specified, our designers may specify glulam to take advantage of the customizable dimensions (i.e. to minimize drop of beam into living space). If, however, you are looking for a single beam or column as part of a renovation project we will be happy to assist.
